RSS COAST GUARD BASIC SEAMANSHIP

 

AIM   

The Coast Guard Basic Course, which is of six weeks duration is to train new entrants or members already in Member States Coast Guard/Marine Police Units in the fundamentals of seamanship and introduce them to navigation, firefighting and engineering. 

 

   

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE

On completion of the Course students should be capable of conducting shipboard duties and be exposed to such other nautical skills or principles that would provide the foundation for their development as a useful and effective seaman.

RSS COAST GUARD  OPERATIONS

PHASE I   PHASE II

 PHASE I

AIM

To train Coast Guard and Maritime Units personnel to safely navigate and coxswain a small boat (RHIB/Boston Whaler).   This will be done through an intense six (06) weeks training which, will highlight the fundamentals of small boat handling.

PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS

            Participants should have: -

·        Successfully complete the Coast Guard Basic Seamanship Course or its equivalent

·        Received at least one year’s consolidation training after graduation from the Basic Course.

·        Is presently or is expected to be a coxswain or given command of a small boat in the near future.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE

            On completion of the Course, the students should be capable of the following among other things:

a.                   Navigate a small boat within inshore waters.

b.                  Conduct boarding techniques

c.                   Execute reactions to emergency situations (man overboard etc.)

d.                  Safely conduct docking and undocking evolutions

e.                   Conduct navigation exercises

f.               Conduct pre-sea checks

PHASE II

AIM



The Coast Guard Phase II Operations Course is of five (05) weeks duration and is designed to train Coast Guard and Marine Police Units personnel to carry out the duties of a Coxswain of a 40ft vessel (Sea Ark).



PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS

Participants should:

a.     Be at the rank of Petty Officer. Where the participant is a Leading Seaman, he/she should have at least five years service in his/her unit and is earmarked for promotion within the next six months.

b.     Have successfully completed the Coast Guard Phase 1 Operations Course or its equivalent

c.     Have received at least two years consolidated training after graduation from the Phase 1 Course.

d.     Have been introduced to Task Book 2. (Students should have a copy of Task Book 2 in their possession at the Regional Security System Training Unit.)

e.     Is presently or is expected to be a coxswain or given command of a 40ft vessel in the near future.

 


COURSE OBJECTIVES



On completion of the Course, the students should be capable of the following among other things:

a.    Executing the ship’s routine
b.    Ensuring safety from groundings and collision
c.    Execute reactions and responses to emergency situations (man overboard)
d.    Safely dock and undock the ship
e.    Conduct navigation exercises
f.     Review pre-sea checks

RSS COASTGUARD PHASE II ENGINEERING
 



AIM
 


The Coast Guard Phase II Engineering Course is of five (05) weeks duration and is designed to prepare Coast Guard and Marine Police Units personnel to carry out duties of an engineer onboard the Sea-Ark or similar Vessel.



PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS



Students must have attended the US MKA Engineering Course or its equivalent and/or received on the job training (OJT) of a comparable nature, for at least one (1) year prior to selection for this Course.
 



 

COURSE OBJECTIVE
 


On completion of the Course, students should be capable of the following:

a.     Be knowledgeable about the safety precautions and practices in the engineering field.

b.     Be conversant with the use of various types of hand and measuring tools.

c.     Be able to identify the different operational systems of the sea ark.

d.     Carry out basic pre-sea checks required.

e.     Identify defects and effect repairs.

f.     Perform routine maintenance as required.

RSS COAST GUARD 920 RHIB OPERATORS COURSE




AIM



To train selected personnel to safely and effectively operate the zodiac 920 RHIB
as an Anti-Narcotic Interceptor craft with special emphasis on joint operations with the RSS Air Wing and Land support. This will be done during a period of two (02) weeks.



 

PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS


• Participants must pass the vetting requirements stipulated.
• Should have completed the Phase I Operations Course or equivalent.
• Have at least one (1) year experience operating small boats.

COURSE OBJECTIVE


On completion of the Course participants should be able to safely and effectively operate and maintain the 920 RHIB and conduct successful drug interdiction operations in concert with RSS Air Wing and Land support.

RSS COAST GUARD BOARD AND RUMMAGE 1 & 2




AIM
 


To train Coast Guard and Marine personnel to perform the task of a law enforcement boarding team member, with intermediate and advance Level skills. This will be done in a two (02) week period.



PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS



Participants should:

• Successfully completed the Coast Guard Basic Seamanship Course or its equivalent
• Have received at least one year’s consolidation training after graduation from the Basic Seamanship Course.
 

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the Course, the students should be capable of the following:

a. Identification of drugs
b. Gathering and preservation of evidence
c. Conducting search and Seizure procedures
d. Defensive tactics
e. Executing Boarding procedures and Techniques.

RSS COAST GUARD RATES LEADERSHIP COURSE

JUNIOR   SENIOR


JUNIOR


AIM


The Junior Rates Leadership Course, which is of two weeks duration is designed to provide and enhance the Leadership and instructional skills of Junior Rates in Member States Coast Guards/Marine Units.
 


PRE-COURSE QUALIFICATIONS



Participants should:
a. Be of the rank of Corporal or equivalent

b. Or a Senior Constable with no less than five years service in the
Coast Guard and is expected from time to time to act in the position of Corporal in his/her Unit

c. Be well motivated and physically fit.

The Senior Rates Leadership Course, which is of three (03) weeks duration, is designed to train Coast Guard/Marine Police Units personnel to enhance their supervisory skills such as leadership and management and team building techniques.
 


PRE COURSE QUALIFICATIONS



Participants should:

• Be at the rank of Petty Officer or above
• Successfully completed the Coast Guard Junior Rates leadership course or its equivalent
• Is presently or is expected to be a supervisor within his Unit.
• Received at least two years consolidation training after graduation from the Junior Rate Leadership Course.
