The Regional Security System (RSS) continues to provide relevant support to the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as that country faces the ongoing eruption of the La Soufriere volcano.

Regional Maritime Officer at the RSS, LT (CG) Rolerick Sobers, pointed out that the RSS is currently coordinating the efforts of the security agencies across the RSS Member States, as they work with the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) and Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

He confirmed that there have been two maritime deployments comprising Coast Guard vessels from Barbados to St. Vincent and the Grenadines since the first eruption on Friday, April 9; the first to deliver supplies, including water, equipment and cots, and the second to transport assessors from the CDRU and CDEMA.

Lt. (CG) Sobers noted that there had been no reports of security issues from the Commissioner of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force. He however noted that the situation was “dynamic and changing very quickly”, and the RSS was prepared for any eventuality that may occur.

The Regional Security System (RSS) has been mobilised and is assisting its Member State, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with the evacuation of residents as they prepare for the possible eruption of the La Soufriere volcano.

Executive Director of the RSS, Captain (N) Errington Shurland, has affirmed that at present his team is working with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the St. Vincent National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO ) and the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (SRC), to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of the residents there.

The island moved from a state of orange alert to red alert earlier this evening, and an evacuation order for the immediate areas surrounding the volcano was issued by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.
