RSS Launches Facebook Page

Regional Security System | Tues 5 Feb 19

The Regional Security System (RSS) is on Facebook.

The organization which plays a major role in the region’s land, sea and air security, launched its page on the popular social media site in January, and members of the public, security practitioners, students, and RSS partners will have easier access to information about the RSS.

Executive Director, Captain (N) Errington Shurland, noted that the RSS already had an active website and Flickr and Youtube pages, but pointed out that a Facebook presence would make the security organization more visible.

He stated: “It is an opportunity to reach the general public and our partners and also to provide a medium for them to reach out to us. Our Facebook presence will assist in RSS brand awareness, boost community engagement and educate those that have no idea about the RSS.”

Persons may access the RSS Facebook page by visiting https://www.facebook.com/rssbarbados.

The Regional Security System (RSS) is a key entity within the Caribbean region.

This was underscored by Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Timothy Harris, who praised the work of the RSS during a short ceremony at the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force headquarters. The event was held to officially thank, and offer some holiday cheer, to officers who would be away from their families during the Christmas season.

Prime Minister Harris pointed out that his island recently had to rely on the regional organization to assist security personnel on their mission to maintain peace in St. Kitts and Nevis, and lauded the efforts of the officers who were deployed from Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada.

“From all accounts those who are visiting have joined forces, enhanced our capacity and capabilities to respond to what was a rising trend of criminal activity, and now we are on a path of reduction. This has been a team effort of regional and local support.

“There has been a renewed sense of calm and security in our country; that is very palpable at this time. This peace, we hope, will endure every day going forward in St. Kitts and Nevis and the rest of the region… We appreciate that without peace there can be no prosperity, we need peace in which our people can go about doing their normal activities and we need peace to encourage the investors to be a part of a growing and successful St. Kitts and Nevis,” the Prime Minister opined.

Mr. Harris further noted that the RSS was not only reliable during matters of crime and violence, but highlighted the crucial role it plays in times of natural disaster. He alluded to the devastation in Dominica following the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, and stated that the organization’s “expertise and experience” made it possible to execute such a coordinated response on such occasions.

“I believe that what has happened in recent [times] has provided persuasive evidence that the region needs a RSS system and indeed we should look beyond the sub-region and Barbados, in my view, to have a CARICOM regional response system,” the Prime Minister asserted.

Nineteen police officers from across the region received a holiday treat when officials of the Regional Security System recently visited them at the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Headquarters where they are currently based.

The troops, originating from Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada, were deployed to St. Kitts and Nevis to assist with the recent spike in crime and violence there.

Executive Director of the RSS, Captain (N) Errington Shurland, commended the officers on their efforts and assured them that their contribution had been recognized and was indeed valuable to the exercise.

“Your sacrifice has contributed to the peace and stability of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis and it is a sacrifice that each and every one does not put up their hand and volunteer to do, but recognize that that sacrifice is a contribution to our strength. There is strength through unity, and that is the motto of the Regional Security System,” he asserted.

The operation which commenced on October 10 this year, has seen a reduction in the incidences of crime on the island, and officers are scheduled to conclude their duties on January 7, 2019.

“You have contributed in no small way to that peace and security. I want to reassure you that your contribution is what the region requires. It is this type of effort and contribution that allows us as a region to be as peaceful and as secure as we are,” the RSS head maintained.

During the brief ceremony, other top officials from the islands represented, echoed the sentiments of Commander Shurland. They were Commissioner of Police, Royal Police Force, Antigua and Barbuda, Mr. Atlee Rodney; Commissioner of Police, Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, Mr. Colin John; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Royal Barbados Police Force, Mr. Sylvester Louis; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Royal Grenada Police Force, Mr. John Charles; and Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Operations, St. Christopher and Nevis, Mr. Adolph Adams.

Executive Director’s Christmas Message 2018

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior today, I want to extend warm Christmas greetings to all staff of the Regional Security System (RSS) and its partners.

I am truly appreciative and content with the assistance which you all have provided throughout the year, as we strived to maintain the outstanding performance and reputation for which the RSS is known. Going forward, we will continue working together to ensure that the RSS is seen as the centre of excellence for the delivery of training in the maritime sub-sector.

To reach our goals we cannot attempt this journey as a single entity, but as a team, and that team concept must spill over into our operational sphere as well. It is with this mindset that we can successfully overcome any challenges with which we might be faced in 2019.

I wish I could say that next year is going to be easier, but the challenges which we will face in 2019 will not be any less demanding than those that we faced in 2018. However, I strongly believe that we can do justice to whatever comes before us if we do it in a collective manner, regionally and internationally. While we did not experience any severe weather systems this year, our security challenges are increasing and we are still tackling the issue of corruption. Corruption has no boundaries and it is an area on which I am very keen about collaborating.

Let me take this time to also express sincerest gratitude to our external partners, for it is through consistent collaboration with those organizations, that we have survived thus far. They include: Impacs; the United States of America; the United Kingdom, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Association (CDEMA) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

In conclusion, I urge you as you enjoy the season’s festivities, to take time to praise the Creator and be mindful of those who are less fortunate due to economic challenges. Make a donation, hug someone you have not seen for a while, or visit someone who is unable to make it out. I also encourage you demonstrate tolerance in your consumption of food and alcoholic beverages, bearing in mind that life goes on after December 31.

On behalf of my wife and family, I wish all staff of the RSS and their families, peace, prosperity and good health for 2019.

Ten officers of the Marine Unit of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force are now better equipped to maintain the department’s vessels thanks to a programme sponsored by the Regional Security System (RSS).

The officers successfully completed courses in Advanced Outboard Maintenance and Basic Engineering, during a three week programme which was conducted at the Royal St. Lucia Police Force – Marine Police Unit Base.

During a closing ceremony for both programmes, Deputy Commissioner of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force, Mr. Milton Desir, said that his organisation “grabbed” at the opportunity for its officers to be trained in those fields as they would be better able to maintain and preserve the existing assets.

Noting that many of the Marine Unit’s operations were conducted under adverse sea conditions, Mr. Desir stated that the vessels must be in “top shape” to ensure successful completion of tasks at sea.

“I am sure that the knowledge you have gained in these two courses will contribute towards enhancing the operational capability of the Marine Unit. I therefore urge you to practice what you have learnt so far, that your individual skills may be enhanced,” the Deputy Commissioner opined.

He advised the participants to display the right attitude at all times, and noted that “if you do not have the right attitude, you will not achieve much”.

“There is a saying that your attitude determines your altitude. So whether you are skillful… or you are the best, if you don’t display the right attitude, you are going nowhere,” the Police official stressed.

Mr. Desir also mentioned the need for additional resources at the Unit and gave the assurance that they would continue to take pride in, and adequately maintain, any new stock. He pointed out: “For us to have a better Marine Unit, for us to preserve the assets that we are entrusted with, we need to do our best, our attitudes have to be there… and we need to work in a harmonious setting so that we can achieve the goals of the Marine Unit, the goals of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force and the goals of the RSS.”
